The Wannenköpfe are formed by a few little slagvolcano's, lying closely together. Actually The Wannenköpfe are a part of " The Wannengroup" a bigger group of volcano's near Ochtendung. They came into existence about 20.000 years ago. In the beginning they were about 80 metres high, after years of exploitation (basalt for instance is used in the road construction) they are now much lower.

Actually The Wannenköpfe is a rather big quarry. But, just a tiny little spot is interesting for us mineral collectors. Of course you may look on other places in the quarry, good luck ! Please let me know when you are successful, I did never succeed.

How to get there ???

Take the highway A61, Aachen - Koblenz, exit Ochtendung (the last before Koblenz) By the T-junction to the left. After about 2 kilometres the next junction, straight on (not to Ochtendung!). About a kilometre further by the next junction take the way to the left, then the first way to the right. After about 100 metres to the left, an unpaved road. Right ahead: quarry The Wannenköpfe. By the entry to the right, you make a big curve round the quarry, then a barrier. Parc your car at the side. On foot downhill. After 150 metres you see on your left a wall; 15 metres high - 40 long, that's the place to be ! It is forbidden to visit the quarry without permission !! For permission, contact: the "Rheinische Provinzial Basalt und Lavawerke GmbH", Postfach 1264, D - 53476 Sinzig. Good luck !
